Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a tattoo cost?

Many factors are considered when pricing a tattoo, but it mainly comes down to how much time is spent on it. The shop minimum is $100. Our artist’s rate is typically $150-$180 per hour. Pieces that will require multiple sittings will be charged by the hour, and will simply cost what the total amount of hours were spent times the rate. We can give an approximate cost for finished work, but bear in mind that number can easily change and is not guaranteed. Custom art takes time and cannot usually be estimated accurately. Pieces that will be completed in one sitting are priced by the piece, not by time. Basically the bigger the work, the better the deal, although our rates are quite fair either way. Remember, tattoos are for life. Don’t bargain shop!

I’m 16 but my parents will consent to my tattoo, is that okay?

Although Montana doesn’t specify a minimum age to be tattooed, we do not allow anyone under the age of 18 to be tattooed at White Light Studios, due to our specific licensing. We require valid government issued I.D. as proof of age. Consider it an opportunity to think about what it is you want for another few years, just to be sure.

How do I take care of my tattoo?

Instructions to take care of your tattoo can be found in the Aftercare section in the link above. Remember, the tattoo is your responsibility after you leave the studio; a few days of careful treatment is important to ensure a lifetime of quality work.

How much is the deposit? What if I have to cancel?

Small tattoos require a $50 deposit. Large pieces and multi-session work requires a $100 deposit per appointment, which is deducted from the final appointment. All deposits are deducted from the cost of the tattoo. All deposits are final, excepting rare and extreme circumstances. Reschedules with a minimum 48 hour advance notice are accepted and the deposit can be transferred to a future appointment. Reschedules within 48 hours the deposit is forfeited to the artist for lost time.

I am going on a 30 mile hike this weekend, should I get a tattoo before then?

No. Please consider future activities before making your appointment. A tattoo only takes a week or so to heal, but it is important to minimize sweating and dirty conditions during that time. So if you hit the gym every night, take a few days off after the tattoo. Don’t do any gardening the next day. No, you can’t float the river. Use common sense and your tattoo (and tattoo artist) will thank you!
